Whatipu Beach is located on the West coast of the North Island of New Zealand a short driving distance from Auckland city. There is a strong feeling of wilderness at Whatipu. Huge sandflats separate the old sea cliffs from the sea. They are covered in scrub and grasses, with salt meadows in places. They are also rich in native plants species, and provide habitat and feeding grounds for a wide variety of birds.
Whatipu Beach is considered separately to be of national importance for its nesting and feeding areas for endangered shore birds and for its freshwater wetland diversity.
